"The
National Study of School Evaluation (NSSE) Library Media Services indicators
describe learning as the core of the school library media program.
They articulate the concepts of information literacy--the ability to find,
use, and evaluate information, which is the foundation of life-long learning.
Thus, in a schoolwide context for learning, Illinois school library media
programs are positioned to impact student learning.
Illinois
State Goal 5: "Use the language arts to acquire, assess, and
communicate information" (Illinois Learning Standards, p. 12) mirrors Category
1 of the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning.... Other
Illinois State Goals also reflect the interdisciplinary nature of learning.
For example, Illinois State Goal 12: "Understand the fundamental concepts,
principles, and interconnections of the life, physical and earth/space
sciences;" (Illinois Learning Standards, p. 34), and Illinois State Goal
24: "Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective
communication and decision-making skills" (Illinois Learning Standards,
p. 74).... The framework of the Illinois Learning Standards includes, for
each discipline, a section called Applications of Learning: Solving Problems,
Communicating, Using Technology, Working on Teams and Making Connections.
These applications are designed to ensure that student learning occurs
and they too mirror the ideas expressed in the information
literacy standards." (Linking for Learning, p. 8)
INFORMATION LITERACY, LIBRARY AND TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
What is "the question(s)," the problem?
What is the need for information?
What do I already know?
How do I locate information to answer "the question(s),"
