The Prophetstown Lyndon Tampico CUSD #3 will join with Whiteside in
the creation of a new bike/walk path.
This project will offer Kindergarten and 1st grade students many learning
opportunities.

Children will be introduced to the concepts of plant life. They will
explore the basic needs necessary for plant life. This unit will offer opportunities
for the children to observe plants in their natural habitat. They
will engage in activities that involve planting seeds, caring for them, making
scientific observations, identifying and classifying plants.

Children will be introduced to the concepts of insect life. This unit will offer opportunities for the children to observe insects in their natural habitat. Students will engage in activities that involve demonstrating and explaining the life cycle of a butterfly. They will also make scientific observations and identify insects that live in their area.

Children will become aware of the importance of taking care of the
earth. Through readings, discussions and walks, students will identilfy
ways people care for the earth in our community.

All children love to learn about animals and the environment.
Children will be exposed to various animals they may encounter while traveling
along the bike path in their community. Students will focus on identifying
animals and comparing animal attributes. They will learn that animals
are classified by families or may be grouped in other ways, such as animals
who walk, fly or swim.

This unit, involving wheeled vehicles and other forms of transportaion, parallels children's own fast-paced, energy-packed natures and is sure to generate interest, investigation, and perhaps invention! Besides promoting observation of vehicles seen in the community, activities will focus on transportation. Children are interested in things that move.
